Company History

In 1929 during the depths of ’the Great Depression’ Walter Carefoot started his own business having finished his apprenticeship as a plasterer and tiler with a local Preston builder.
By sheer hard work, success slowly came; the handcart being replaced by a motorcycle and side box, then a car and trailer, and in 1936 a lorry.
The company progressed from carrying out small property repairs to building houses and by the outbreak of World War II Walter had around 30 men working for him.
In 1958 a private, limited company was formed, with Walter Carefoot as Chairman and Managing Director, and his wife Elsie and son Colin as Directors.
In 1964, Walter retired and his eldest son Colin, who had experience of both bricklaying and wagon driving took over as Managing Director.
In 1966 a transport company was set up operating a bulk tipping haulage business which now has over 30 vehicles in the fleet delivering throughout the UK.
By the 1970’s all of Walters’ sons Colin, Clive, Geoffrey and Charles had joined the company. Clive took over the reins for both the building and transport companies when his elder brother Colin retired. He applied his astute mind and business acumen to build the business up, through difficult trading conditions experienced during the recessions of the early 1980’s and 1990’s. Around this time, Clives’ two sons Colin and Stuart joined the company, both gaining first-hand experience of the construction and transport industry.
During the late 1990’s Clive continued to raise the profile of the company, by combining the building, transport and property companies under the banner of Carefoot Plc. Around the same time an office was established in the Manchester area to service more efficiently contracts in the region. This was relocated in 2005 to Warrington to be more centrally placed for our operations into Cheshire, Merseyside and the North Midlands.
Following Clive’s retirement in 2001, Colin, took over as Managing Director. Building on previous success Colin has continued to expand and develop the family business to the present day with the support of Charles Carefoot and a loyal Management team.
